Digital forensics is the science of identifying, preserving, analyzing, and presenting digital evidence. At the Center for Forensics, Biometrics and Privacy (CFBP), we conduct research and training in the field of digital forensics to support cybersecurity, incident response, and legal investigations.
As technology evolves, so do the threats — and so must the methods to trace, understand, and document them. Our work in digital forensics bridges academia and real-world application, helping organizations and authorities respond to and investigate cyber incidents effectively.
Our research covers multiple areas of digital forensic investigation, tool development, and readiness, with an emphasis on scalability, automation, and legal admissibility.
Key topics include: Memory (RAM) forensics and live analysis Disk imaging, file system analysis, and artifact recovery Network traffic and log forensics Mobile device and IoT forensics Triage tools and rapid incident response techniques Forensic readiness planning for public and private sectors Chain of custody and forensic reporting standards
CFBP's digital forensics lab is equipped with specialized tools and environments for: RAM analysis using tools like Volatility Disk analysis with platforms like Autopsy, FTK, and open-source scripts Incident simulation and testing environments
Our research includes developing custom forensic scripts and building response playbooks for use in both academic and applied scenarios.
Digital forensics is an integral part of CFBP’s educational mission. We provide: Lectures and hands-on lab sessions using real forensic tools Capture-the-Flag (CTF) challenges and simulations Supervised theses in forensic analysis, tooling, and automation Involvement in ongoing research projects
Students gain practical experience with real-world forensic techniques and tools, preparing them for careers in cybersecurity and investigation.
We welcome partnerships with: Law enforcement and legal professionals Public sector IT teams Private companies in need of forensic readiness or investigation support International researchers focused on evidence-based cybersecurity
Whether you’re looking to strengthen your organization’s forensic capability, collaborate on a funded project, or mentor a new generation of investigators — CFBP is here to support.
